Which Blinds Work in Which Room?
When searching for blinds and window dressings, it’s important to consider the use of the room you intend to put them in.
Kitchen: blinds in the kitchen should be fireproof, easy to clean, and should not have any loose cords or details, which could hang on the bench and become entangled with food preparation. Try wood blinds, blinds that filter sun or aluminium blinds.
Living Room: you want blinds that look great and will remain stylish for years to come. Roman blinds and wooden blinds work well in living areas. If you wish to preserve a scenic view, use shades which roll up tight. If children and pets play in the living room, choose the sturdiest blinds you can buy (usually aluminium).
Lighter coloured blinds in the living room help make the space appear larger, however, dirt and dust show up and they need to be cleaned more often.
Bedroom: depending on your décor, many styles of blinds would suit a bedroom. You want privacy, so opt for blinds that “black out” light (and vision) from outside. Thermal-backed fabric blinds, venetians with black-out function and wooden blinds would look stunning with most bedroom décor and help you keep the light out when you’re trying to sleep. These are the perfect solution for anyone who works night shift or likes to sleep in on weekends.
Nursery: you need to be conscious of safety features. Don’t allow cords to overhand cribs, and choose a style like Romans or Venetians to block out light.
Study: Use blackout blinds like Romans or venetians to minimize glare on your computer. If your study or studio overlooks a view, you might like a shade which rolls up from the bottom to allow you to block out some glare while retaining your view.
Remember to keep a consistent look throughout your home, especially if blinds are visible from the front of the house. The color, size and texture of your blinds should follow through from room to room. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing blinds, so it’s up to you to decide what works best for your lifestyle.
